How EV Charging Costs Work
Your home-charging cost comes down to three numbers: your battery size in kilowatt-hours, your electricity rate in dollars per kilowatt-hour, and charging losses.
The formula
Cost of a full charge = battery kWh ÷ (1 − charging loss) × your rate. A 60 kWh battery at a 10% loss and $0.16/kWh costs about $10.67 to fill.
Why losses matter
Home AC charging is roughly 85–90% efficient, so you pay for a little more energy than actually reaches the battery.
